Dr. Bonillas obtained his B.S. degree from The University of Arizona in 1996, majoring in Nutritional Sciences. In 2000, he obtained his M.D. degree from The University of Arizona College of Medicine, and was subsequently accepted into a categorical General Surgery Residency program at St. Lukes – Roosevelt in New York City where he completed three years. His training was temporarily interrupted in 2003 when he was accepted into a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at New York University Medical Center under the leadership of Dr. Geoffrey C. Gurtner. He has been actively researching the use of ex vivo microvascular free-flaps as vascularized bio-scaffolds for tissue engineering using a custom designed perfusion bioreactor, with the end-goal being the fabrication of vascularized neo-organs. After completing his third year of research, he will complete a three-year Plastic Surgery Fellowship at the University of Texas Medical Branch , in Galveston starting in July of 2006.
